Mathew Arnold was born on December 24, 1822 in Laleham, England. He died on April 15, 1888 in Liverpool, England. He was an English poet and critic, and one of the most important figures in Victorian literature. He is best known for his lyric poems, such as "Dover Beach" and "The Scholar Gypsy," as well as his long narrative poems, such as "Sohrab and Rustum" and "Empedocles on Etna." He also wrote prose works on social and educational topics, and was an important literary critic. Arnold's death was caused by congestive heart failure.
