 Thomas Gray (26 December 1716 – 30 July 1771) was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar, and professor at Cambridge University. He is best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, published in 1751.

2. He was the fifth of twelve children born to Philip and Dorothy Gray.
4. Gray attended Eton College from 1725 to 1734.
5. He then went on to study at Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1734.

7. The poem was a great success and made Gray famous.
8. Gray was a friend of poet Horace Walpole and often visited him in his home at Strawberry Hill.
9. He was also a close friend of the poet Richard West.
10. Gray was appointed Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University in 1757.
11. He was a Fellow of both Peterhouse and Pembroke College, Cambridge.
12. Gray wrote a number of other poems, including Ode on the Spring and Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College.
13. He was a classical scholar and translated a number of works from Latin and Greek.
14. Gray died on 30 July 1771.
15. His body was buried in St. George's chapel, Windsor.
