Christina Rossetti
Christina Georgina Rossetti (5 December 1830 – 29 December 1894) was an English poet of the Victorian era who wrote a variety of romantic, devotional, and children's poems. She is best known for her long poem "Goblin Market" and for the words of the Christmas carol "In the Bleak Midwinter".
Rossetti was born in London, the youngest child in an extraordinarily gifted family.  Her mother, Frances Polidori, was the sister of Lord Byron’s friend and physician, John William Polidori. Rossetti's siblings included the eminent pre-Raphaelite painter and poet Dante Gabriel, and Christina's older sister Maria, who also wrote poetry. Her brother William Michael and her aunt, the scholar and writer Mary Shelley, were also influential figures in her life.
Rossetti's first volume of poetry, Goblin Market and Other Poems, was published in 1862. This was followed by The Prince's Progress and Other Poems (1866), Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book (1872), and A Pageant and Other Poems (1881). Rossetti's work was influenced by her Christian faith, the Romantic Movement, and her personal experiences of grief and loss. Her relationship with her brother Dante Gabriel was also a source of inspiration for much of her writing, as was her lifelong friendships with artists such as William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais.
Rossetti's legacy is marked by her status as one of the most important and influential women poets of the Victorian era. Her work has been widely reprinted, adapted, and anthologized, and she has inspired many other poets, novelists, and composers. Rossetti has been honored with a monument in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey and with numerous memorials and plaques throughout England. In 2020, Rossetti was included in the BBC's list of the 100 most inspiring and influential women from the past 100 years.
